A Walk Through History
Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.
The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.
Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.
In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.
Booking.com’s range of Chester accommodation includes hotels with swimming pools, guest houses by the train station and B&Bs with parking near Chester Airport.

The city is vegan friendly, as well as the people being friendly. All historic sites are within walking distance, there is a sightseeing bus that does a tour with added river cruise as part of the price. Chester is still being excavated due to new architectural findings.
The Visitor centre is well located, near to the cathedral, and the staff are very helpful.
There are many places to eat, some restaurant chains and many local businesses.

I recommend going to the Orthodox church to celebrate the Greek Easter this year it was brilliant, each year it seems to get better and better. I also recommend staying at the MacDonalds New Blossom hotel which is centrally appointed and easy to get to the church via the No:16 bus the hotel has good facilities and does a variety of full English cooked breakfasts it also has good Wi-Fi in each room and good bathing facilities. At an reasonable price. If you still have time board the tour bus and also go for a river trip as well as an good place for shopping and restaurants.

I was here for a planned weekend singing the services in the Cathedral. I loved the atmosphere of the city, the rows had so much character. The Cathedral was amazing and walking the walls was great. We were lucky enough to go into the castle whish was interesting and really informative. I wanted to see more and I want to come back!

Beautiful Roman city.
Beautiful Roman city. People friendly and helpful, as well as caring. I found the people to be unusually warm and friendly for a UK city tbh. I would return to Chester for this reason! Also, a classy city. Lots of good shops, wine bars, etc.
The garden was very tranquil and the location to Chester city centre ,the room was a twin room on first floor no lift so that might be an issue for the less mobile but a lovely quiet location breakfast was fresh and a buffet would of preferred coffee and tea being served to you rather than the drinks being in flask type dispensers which was not hot but staff did replenish when asked just not what you expect of this type of hotel everyone wants a fresh hot tea and coffee staff very friendly and welcoming
An excellent, quiet boutique hotel with great facilities within walking distance of Chester city centre, where the hosts are very welcoming, friendly and professional. Private parking was an added bonus too. A nice personal touch of a cuppa and home made cake on arrival! Luxurious room and very comfortable bed. Amazing wonderful breakfast with a great choice and using quality ingredients. 10/10 for us for everything. Thank you Dave and Kirsty for a lovely stay, we will be returning.
It is a lovely historic hotel. Our room was beautifully presented with a lovely bathroom.
We requested two twin rooms for our three-night stay and they were side-by-side.
Obviously very close to the railway station and walkable into the city centre.
Delicious and plentiful breakfast which really set us up for our days out.
We were friends from Chester College (University) days enjoying a reunion and the hotel was a good place to stay.
We received an unexpected upgrade which was lovely the room much bigger than expected. Breakfast was good and served in a clean and relaxed environment and the staff were lovely. The location was just next to hoole railway station which was very convenient, there was no rail noise that we noticed and we were within walking distance of Chester centre and the river dee.
The hotel is in a great location not far from Chester city centre and with local shops nearby. We appreciated the opportunity to have a meal in the restaurant before heading into the city for an evening event. Staff were very helpful and the room had everything we needed. We would certainly recommend the hotel to family and friends whenever they visited Chester.
This hotel is ideally situated a few minutes walk from Chester’s city centre restaurants, bars and other attractions. Although it’s not the most attractive building externally the room and bathroom we had both looked as if they had been recently refurbished. The young lady who checked us in was a pleasure to deal with - friendly, welcoming, polite and helpful.
Vincy and Andrew the duty manager were really professional, Vincy even offered to help me and my daughter pack our stuff after Andrew authorised over the phone to give me the full refund so I could leave.
Didn't stay in the hotel so can't comment on anything else.
This is definitely not a 4 star hotel, not by any standard. Well not in my experience anyway.
We've stayed at the ABode many times and love the setting and location. Right in the heart of Chester, it's easy to walk to shops and restaurants, and the cathedral and city wall. The Abode rooms are very comfortable; breakfasts are delicious. Staff have always been helpful and courteous. Parking is conveniently located under the hotel.
The staff at Leonardo was amazing! Every request was promptly answered with a smile & great personality. Accommodations were comfortable & clean. Location perfect with many restaurants nearby. Chester has been the highlight of our trip & we are hoping to return in the future. I would recommend this hotel for every reason possible.
George was an exceptional host, providing everything you could imagine to ensure a wonderful stay. The location was ideal for exploring Chester, only a block from the city center. And George’s breakfast lived up to its famous reputation …..incredible ! Highly recommended ! !
Hotel fantastic, exceptionally clean and warm throughout staff were great. Breakfast lovely and really enjoyed free use of swimming pool sauna and jacuzzi and in perfect location with just a short 5 min walk into city centre. Loved chester will definitely stay here again..
Room and bathroom was clean and appeared quite new. Staff generally polite and affable and check -in was relatively quick given there was a queue when I arrived. Hotel very handy for Chester city centre being a short walk away.
Lovely traditional family hotel. Located on the outskirt of Chester, very quick drive to the Cheshire Oaks, Chester Zoo, and the city centre. Facilities are a bit old, but still okay to use. Breakfast was great.
Staff were really friendly. An older building with character so don’t expect all shiny and new. The hotel is good value for money and is exactly as advertised. I will almost certainly return.
The hotel is easy to get to and is a 2 minute walk from Chester City centre. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the room was lovely to stay in
